2009 Christina River Wrap up

Wrap up of the 18th Annual Christina River Clean Up around Naamans Creek

This year we had 62 participants, including those from Arden and Ardentown and nine participants from the Girls’ and Boys’ Club of Claymont.  We had seven students (in addition to those from Claymont) who participated and received community service hours.  Drew Hayes and Danny Juan rode the Got Junk trucks to insure that all the collected trash was picked up.  Drew states that about 4500 pounds would be a fair estimate of volume.  This included a few mattresses, benches, and chairs.  Got Junk both picked up the trash and paid the tipping fees for it at the landfill.

Dan and Lois Deeble (and their daughter) arranged a fine lunch in Harry’s rear parking lot.  Harry’s, Sweeney’s, Acme, Safeway, Rite Aid, and Papa John’s were kind enough to supply materials for the lunch.

We picked up materials from both directly around the creek and also in DelDOT wetlands, stormwater basins and in swales below catchbasins along Naamans Road.  Evraz Claymont Steel had employees pick up trash from the section of the creek within its property.

State Senator Cathy Cloutier and her two children joined in the clean up and County Councilman John Cartier both recruited helpers from the Girls’ and Boys’ Club and contributed to the financial cost of running the affair.  We owe both legislators a big thank you.
